Racing officially began at the track in 1885 and with the exception of a 12 year period from 1936 – 1948 has continued ever since.
The course attracts support from leading trainers and jockeys in Ireland in both flat and national hunt racing and is noted for it’s friendly atmosphere and, being only 1km from the town, a lot of the punters invariably head for town after racing with Race dances at the Abbey Hotel being an integral part of the occasion.
